The official exam bulletin is published and maintained by PSI. Bulletin content (subjects covered in the exam), time allowed and passing score are detailed in this document. Direct links to bulletin PDFs change regularly. Always set your “FAVORITE” or “BOOKMARK” to the LANDING PAGE we have linked above. Candidates should always review the current exam information on the PSI website before submitting their license application.
In addition to the trade-specific examination, you are required to pass the Connecticut Business & Law Exam offered by PSI.
NOTICE: About reference #2 above; APSP no longer operates under that name, as the organization later became part of the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA).
Because the original APSP publication is now largely out-of-print and difficult to locate, candidates may have trouble finding the exact edition listed in the bulletin. PSI allows later editions of non-code reference materials to be used for study purposes.
For exam preparation, the closest current replacement is the PHTA Service Tech Manual provided through PHTA’s Certified Service Technician (CST) and Certified Maintenance Specialist (CMS) programs. Candidates should also focus heavily on the NEC 2017 or 2020 edition, which remains the primary open-book reference allowed in the examination center. The link we have provided is to the PHTA course ($723).
The books listed below are NOT allowed at the exam location
We recommend that you purchase one of the reference books above to study for your exam. Each book is a comprehensive subject index to the NEC. They provide an even faster way to look up answers in the code and are far more detailed than the index at the end of the code book.
Ugly's References contain practical applications of the NEC such as Ohm‘s Law, series/parallel circuits, voltage drop, load calculations, motor phases, impediance, inductance and math formulas you are expected to know. “Basic Knowledge” and “Electrical Calculations” are subjects covered in the exam and are assumed (most likely not listed as a subject for electrical and mechanical exams of all types).
