This study guide is organized to match the way topics appear on the Journeyman Lineman Electrician exam. Here is what is included in your download:
Use these questions alongside your National Electrical Code (NEC) book. Read a section of the book, then work through the related practice questions to check your understanding.
Each sample question includes a reference to the NEC article number where the subject is discussed. This helps you quickly review why the correct answer is right and reinforces the process of looking up information efficiently — a key skill for an open-book exam.
Bookmarks have been added throughout the study guide to help you:
Use the additional questions drawn from Ugly’s Electrical References to strengthen your coverage of general theory, Ohm’s Law and topics that commonly appear on the electrical exam.
Sample exam questions are sourced from the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Ugly's Electrical References (2020 or 2023 versions). Sample questions are fully indexed and cross referenced to help you navigate back to the same location where you left off between study sessions.
Bookmarks have been added to help the user randomly jump to specific questions related to NEC Articles in the code.
Total approx. number of questions in this package: 1,060

The official exam bulletin is published and maintained by PSI. Bulletin content (subjects covered in the exam) and file names for PDFs change regularly. Always set your “favorite” or “bookmark” to the landing page we have linked above. Candidates should always review the current exam information on the PSI website before applying or testing.
The books listed below are NOT allowed at Texas exam locations.
We recommend that you purchase one of the reference books above to study for your exam. Each book is a comprehensive subject index to the NEC. They provide an even faster way to look up answers in the code and are far more detailed than the index at the end of the NEC code book.
Reference #2 above contains practical applications of the NEC such as Ohm‘s Law, series/parallel circuits, voltage drop, load calculations, motor phases, impedance, inductance and math formulas you are expected to know. “Basic Theory” is covered in the exam but detailed subjects are assumed and not specifically called out in the bulletin.
NOTICE: For the calculations portion of the Texas exam, Annex D in the NEC is a good source of examples. There are no questions from Annex D contained in our set of questions. Additionally, we give you a list of questions in our answer key that may apply to calculations. You will want to purchase a separate book that covers calculations in more depth simular to #3 recommended above and drill yourself repeatedly.
